SPECIAL SALE OF ONE OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST COLLECTIONS OF MINT WORLDWIDE BAGGAGE LABELS…PART I
This unique collection was formed by a motion picture travelogue producer who visited every corner of the globe during the 1940’s to 1960’s.

Being a collector at heart, he developed a passion for hotel baggage labels that could be acquired at each destination. He also frequently traded with other globetrotters who had visited different locales in earlier times. Eventually the collection grew to become one of the most substantial in the possession of a single individual. Most of the hotels he visited have either ceased to exist or abandoned the practice of having labels, and some became “off limits” because of political difficulties. For these and other reasons the collection took on the character of a self-contained museum, chronicling the story of travel in good and bad times, as well as the evolution of graphic design from Art Deco flamboyance to the age of the “poster explosion”.

The luggage label’s purpose was, of course, to advertise the establishment from whence it came. To accomplish this, great effort was placed on utilizing creative talent in label design. The style of lettering, its size, juxtaposition, color and color contrasts, as well as graphic symbolism all played a part. Naturally the hotel proprietors eagerly pasted their labels on each guest’s luggage, but the availability of unused (unpasted) labels was quite another matter. One would have to ask for them, and only the truly dedicated made a practice of doing that. This is why so few mint labels exist.

While most hobbyists keep their baggage labels in albums or carefully assembled files, others have used them for decorating purposes such as tabletops inlaid with colorful baggage labels and covered in glass, door or wall paneling, or simply matted and framed as a montage.

We are pleased to offer Part I of this unique collection broken down into manageable lots by country and/or topic. This is primarily a one-of-a-kind collection and each lot is different even though the title may be similar. Prices for Baggage Labels have been rising but they are still extremely inexpensive. Take this opportunity to acquire some of these rarely offered works of art.
